How to Make a Healing Pain Rub at Home : Arthritis Pain , Muscle Injuries & More

Pain is not just a surface issue.
Muscle aches, joint stiffness, arthritis, nerve pain, and post-injury inflammation are often caused by poor circulation, tissue damage, and inflammatory signaling inside the body.
This is why many conventional pain creams only numb — they don’t heal.
Herbal medicine works differently. When the right plants are infused into oil, they reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, calm nerves, and support tissue regeneration — allowing the body to actually repair what’s hurting.
This is the exact philosophy behind my Healing Pain Rub, and below I’m showing you how to make a powerful version at home.
How Herbal Pain Rubs Actually Work
Topical herbal oils work because:
Fat-soluble plant compounds penetrate the skin
Circulatory herbs bring blood and oxygen to damaged tissue
Anti-inflammatory compounds calm swollen joints
Nervine herbs soothe irritated nerves
Pain relief improves with consistent use, because healing is cumulative.
The Herbs & Why They’re Used
Arnica
Used for trauma, injuries, bruising, and inflammation. Helps reduce swelling and pain while supporting tissue repair.
Ginger
A warming circulatory herb that relaxes tight muscles and improves blood flow. Excellent for stiffness and chronic aches.
Turmeric
Contains curcuminoids that inhibit inflammatory enzymes. Powerful for arthritis, joint pain, and chronic inflammation.
Comfrey Leaf
Traditionally called knit-bone. Supports regeneration of connective tissue, joints, ligaments, and muscles.
St. John’s Wort
One of the most effective herbs for nerve pain. Helps calm shooting, burning, or tingling sensations.
Cayenne
Increases circulation and interrupts pain signaling via capsaicin. Excellent for arthritis and deep joint pain.
Rosemary
Improves circulation, reduces muscle spasms, and provides antioxidant protection to damaged tissue.
Lavender
Calms inflammation, reduces tension, and supports nervous system relaxation — allowing muscles to release.
What You’ll Need
Herbs (dried)
Arnica flowers
Ginger root
Turmeric root
Comfrey leaf
St. John’s Wort
Cayenne pepper
Rosemary
Lavender
(You don’t need perfect ratios — herbal medicine works through synergy.)
Carrier Oil
Choose one:
Olive oil (deeply penetrating, best for pain)
Castor oil (excellent for joints and inflammation)
Or a blend of both
Optional
Beeswax (if you want a thicker rub instead of oil)
Roller bottles or jars
Method 1: Slow Infusion (Best Potency)
Fill a glass jar about ½–⅔ full with dried herbs
Cover completely with oil (herbs must be submerged)
Cap loosely and place in a warm, dark area
Infuse for 4–6 weeks, shaking gently every few days
Strain through cheesecloth or fine mesh
This method produces the most medicinally active oil.
Method 2: Heat Infusion (Faster Option)
Combine herbs and oil in a double boiler
Heat on very low (never boiling)
Infuse for 2–4 hours, stirring occasionally
Cool and strain
This method is faster and still effective.
To Turn It Into a Rub or Roller
For a Roller
Pour infused oil directly into a 10 mL roller bottle
Apply to affected areas 2–3 times daily
For a Thick Rub
Warm infused oil gently
Add beeswax (about 1 oz beeswax per 1 cup oil)
Stir until melted
Pour into jars and allow to set
How to Use
Apply directly to sore muscles, joints, or injured areas
Massage into skin until absorbed
Use daily for chronic pain
Reapply as needed for flare-ups
Consistent use provides the greatest benefit.
Final Thought
Pain is information, not punishment.
When you address circulation, inflammation, nerves, and tissue repair together, the body responds — naturally.
Whether you make this yourself or choose to use mine, the goal is the same:
real healing, not temporary numbing.
